C. 5c l’ER COPY 16 PAGES TODAY COMMUNITY FAIR WINNERS ANNOUNCED Civic clubs, other organizations, merchants and individuals entered floats in the parade which was part of the ceremonies open ing the Tri-Community Fair last Friday. The parade was led by the American Legion color guard and Boy Scout troops (upper left), followed by the Stephens-Lee maching band (upper right). The float winning first pribe among club entries was that of the Swannanoa Men’s and Woman’s Clubs (lower right), a great many people in the three communities entered their work in the fair exhibits shown in the High school gymnasium (lower left). Men’s Club Studies Plan To Construct Community Building Money enough to start con struction of the planned Swan nanoa Community Building is on hand, it was reported at the Oct. 1 meeting of the Swannanoa Men’s Club. Therefore, a committee was appointed to study the feasibility of beginning work at the present time. Committee members are Charles Porter, Roy Alexander, and Bob Mueller. The meeting opened with a program conducted by Chief Pet ty Officers of the navy Wooten and McClean. The navy men showed films of actual naval war fare, including the Inchon land ing and an evacuation project, taken during battle. Burnell Hade Red Cross Chapter Chairman The annual meeting of the Black Mountain - Swannanoa Red Cross chapter was held Monday night in the Methodist church on State street. F. M. Burnett was elected Chapter chairman, Otty E. Leeman, vice-chairman, Mrs. Pearl Perkins, secretary, and Roy Alex ander, treasurer. Mr. Burnett lives at Ridgecrest, having moved here with his wife in 1950 after retiring from the position of commissioner of inter state commerce commission. Mr. Burnett is a brother of Mrs. R. E. Hurst. Otty E. Leeman holds a re sponsible position with Beacon Mfg. Co. and he and Mrs. Lee man have their home on Crag —Tirm to Page 8, this Sec. Homecoming Day For Alumni Set For Friday, October 19 The Alumni Association of Black Mountain High school is sponsoring Homecoming Day for alumni, Oct. 19, at 3 o’clock with a football game, Black Mountain vs. Sand Hill. Following the game supper will be served at the high school. A period of class reunions will follow. A business session and election of officers will take place, fol lowed by an evening of square dancing. All alumni are urged to attend. Town Water Level Dangerously Low W. Dean Willis, town clerk, re ports that the water level in the reservoir is still going down a little each day. He estimates that at the present time the storage supply is about half the normal capacity. Science Circus At Black Mountain High Friday Morning The famous Bob Brown Science Circus will be shown to students in the Black Mountain High school gymnasium at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19. N. C. Shuford, high school principal, has announced that the public is invited to at tend this performance. A Black Mountain High school girl will be the electric girl. More Exhibits Greater Variety Shown This Year The number of exhibits at the Tri-Community Fair last week were said to be greater than at any previous fair and that the variety in each division of the entries was greater. Assembly Meeting Set For Friday The quarterly meeting of the Southeastern Christian Assembly will be held at the Monte Vista hotel on Friday, Oct 19. A large attendance is expected from sev eral states. There are three special features of this meeting. The preliminary survey of a portion of the 600 acre property one mile south of Black Mountain tied in with the T.V.A. map of the entire prop erty will be presented for the first time. This topographical map will be used as a basis not only for the placing of sewer and water lines and for preparing roads and streets needed, but will also serve as a means for the planning of the entire future development. In connection with this meet ing, as a second feature, there will be held a meeting of mem bers of the Boards of the Christ ian Women’s Fellowship under the leadership of Mrs. Glen Haney of Greenville, N. C., who is pres ident of the N. C. Christian Wom en’s Fellowship, and of Mrs. H. H. Settle who is the secretary of this organization in North Caro lina and South Carolina. Francis, expert practical farmer and Hay wood county civic leader, who spoke to the crowd gathered for the opening of the Tri-Community Fair last Friday. “A fair creates a wonderful spirit among the people and it creates an interest in agriculture.
